New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for selected meritorious students to submit applications for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27 through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), giving eligible students additional time to complete the application process.
The new deadline for submitting applications is September 30, 2026. The extension is expected to provide additional time to students who have cleared the prescribed selection examination but have not yet completed their scholarship applications on the portal.
The revised verification schedule provides additional time for institutions and district authorities to process applications after submission.
Under the updated timeline, Institute Nodal Officer (INO) verification at Level 1 must be completed by October 15, while District Nodal Officer (DNO) verification at Level 2 must be completed by October 31, 2026.
Scholarship targets students at risk of dropping out
The NMMSS is designed to provide financial support to academically promising students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education beyond the elementary level.
Implemented by the Department of School Education & Literacy, the scheme seeks to reduce school dropouts after Class VIII and support students in completing their education up to Class XII.
Under the programme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to Class IX students who qualify through the selection examination conducted by their respective State or Union Territory governments.
The scholarship can subsequently be renewed for Classes X, XI and XII, subject to the prescribed academic requirements.
₹12,000 annual support for eligible students
Each selected student receives a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year.
The financial assistance is intended to help families meet education-related expenses and reduce the economic pressures that can contribute to students leaving school prematurely.
The scheme is available to students enrolled in State Government, Government-aided and local body schools. Students studying in private schools are not covered under NMMSS.
For families facing financial constraints, the annual scholarship can provide meaningful support during the crucial transition from elementary to secondary and higher-secondary education.
Income and academic criteria apply
The scholarship is targeted at students who demonstrate both academic merit and financial need.
To be eligible to appear for the scholarship selection test, a student's parental income must generally not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per annum.
Students are also required to have secured at least 55 per cent marks or an equivalent grade in the Class VII examination. The minimum academic requirement is relaxed by five percentage points for students belonging to SC and ST categories.
These criteria are intended to ensure that the programme reaches students who demonstrate academic potential but may face financial barriers to continuing their education.
Direct transfer puts funds into students' accounts
NMMSS scholarships are disbursed directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism.
The payments are processed electronically through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
The direct-transfer model is designed to reduce delays and minimise the scope for intermediaries in scholarship disbursement.
It also provides a more transparent mechanism for tracking the flow of government assistance from the programme to individual beneficiaries.
One-time registration introduced for 2026-27
For the 2026-27 project year, students selected for NMMSS are required to complete a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal before applying for the scholarship scheme.
The NSP has been accepting applications from June 1, 2026.
Once OTR is completed, students can proceed with their application for the relevant scholarship programme.
The introduction of a one-time registration process is intended to create a common digital identity for students on the scholarship platform and streamline applications across government scholarship schemes.
Nearly 2.67 lakh applications submitted
The latest figures indicate significant participation in the current scholarship cycle.
As of August 31, 2026, students had submitted 79,398 fresh applications and 1,87,208 renewal applications under NMMSS.
Together, the figures represent more than 2.66 lakh applications submitted through the portal.
The government has urged all eligible students who have qualified for the scholarship to complete their applications within the revised deadline.
Students who have already submitted their applications have also been advised to check whether the applications have been successfully verified by the relevant institutional, district or State authorities.
Two-stage verification process
The scholarship application process includes two levels of verification.
At Level 1, the application is examined by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO). Applications then move to Level 2, where verification is undertaken by the District Nodal Officer (DNO).
Under the revised schedule, institutions have until October 15 to complete Level 1 verification, while district authorities have until October 31 to complete Level 2 verification.
The two-stage process is intended to validate student information and ensure that scholarship benefits are directed to eligible beneficiaries.
For students, completing the application alone is therefore not sufficient. They also need to ensure that the application progresses through the required verification stages.
NSP serves as a common scholarship platform
The NMMSS is administered through the National Scholarship Portal, the government's central digital platform for scholarship schemes operated by different departments.
The portal provides a common mechanism for students to register, submit applications and track the status of their scholarship requests.
Digitalisation of the scholarship process has also enabled greater standardisation in application and verification procedures, while reducing the need for students to manage separate paper-based processes.
Why the extension matters
The deadline extension is particularly important for students who have cleared the qualifying examination but have yet to complete the digital application process.
Scholarship applications can require students to provide and verify multiple pieces of information, making adequate time for submission and institutional verification important.
The additional window also gives schools and nodal officers more time to identify errors, complete verification and ensure that eligible applications are not excluded because of procedural delays.
However, students should not wait until the final day to submit their applications, as technical or documentation-related issues could delay completion.
Supporting India's school education goals
The NMMSS is part of the government's broader effort to improve retention in secondary education and ensure that financial constraints do not prevent academically capable students from continuing their studies.
The transition from Class VIII to Class IX is particularly important because the cost of continuing education can become a greater burden for economically vulnerable households as students progress through school.
By providing predictable annual financial support and linking the assistance to academic performance, the scholarship seeks to combine financial inclusion with educational continuity.
The scheme also creates a pathway for students to remain in formal education through Class XII, potentially improving their prospects for higher education, vocational training and future employment.
Students have until September 30
With the application deadline now extended to September 30, 2026, eligible students have a further opportunity to complete the NMMSS application process.
The subsequent verification deadlines — October 15 for INO verification and October 31 for DNO verification — provide the institutional and district authorities with additional time to process applications.
For students and families, the immediate priority is to complete the One-Time Registration, submit the scholarship application through NSP and track the application through the verification stages.
The extension offers more time, but the underlying objective remains unchanged: ensuring that students with academic potential and limited financial resources are able to remain in school and continue their education up to the higher-secondary level.
