The new programmes span diverse fields ranging from Mathematics, Robotics, Semiconductor Materials Technology, Public Policy, Sustainable Engineering, Offshore and Maritime Engineering, Sports Analytics and AI, among others.

Several of these programmes are designed to integrate strong theoretical foundations with industry-relevant applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantitative finance, manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, policy design, computational engineering and analytics.

Welcoming students from across India to avail themselves of the benefits of these academic programmes, Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean  said,

“The new programmes launched by IIT Madras reflect the evolving needs of industry, research and society. They are designed to equip students with strong foundational knowledge along with interdisciplinary and industry-relevant skills. We are also expanding flexible and web-enabled learning opportunities so that students from across the country can access high-quality education in emerging domains and prepare themselves for careers of the future.”

MATHEMATICS

Among the key launches is a new four-year B.S. Programme in Mathematics by the Department of Mathematics, one of India’s top-ranked mathematics departments. Ranked 84 globally and No. 1 in India in Mathematics in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the Department has built a strong reputation for research, global collaborations and advanced training in pure and applied mathematics.

The new B.S. (Mathematics) programme will offer students the option to continue for an additional year and graduate with a dual B.S.-M.S. degree. The programme has been designed to provide rigorous foundational training in core mathematics while also enabling specialisation pathways in advanced and industry-oriented domains.

Students enrolled in the programme will have access to electives related to Cryptography, Computational Mathematics, Quantitative Finance, Financial Engineering, Actuaries, Data Analytics, AI-enabled Manufacturing and Quality Engineering. With three Humanities electives and six free electives, students can also pursue minors in complementary disciplines, enhancing both employability and opportunities for higher studies and research.

‘NATIONAL PRIORITIES & EMERGING INDUSTRIES’

The Institute has also launched several new postgraduate programmes aligned with national priorities and emerging industries.

The M.Tech. in Semiconductor Materials Technology has been designed as an industry-aligned programme focused on the materials, processes and nanomanufacturing techniques required for next-generation semiconductor fabrication. The programme aims to prepare graduates for roles such as Process Engineers, Yield Enhancement Specialists and Materials Scientists, supporting India’s ambitions to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

The newly launched M.A. in Public Policy seeks to equip students with a deeper understanding of governance, policy design and public administration across sectors such as healthcare, education, environment, transportation, finance and international relations. The programme is aimed at preparing graduates for careers in government, public services, policy consulting, development organisations and the private sector.

Other New Academic Programmes being introduced this year include:

M.Tech. in Robotics by the Department of Engineering Design

M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems

M.Sc. in Materials and Manufacturing

M.Sc. in Sustainable Engineering

M.Sc. in Offshore and Maritime Engineering
